About the Epilepsy Center

Designated a Level 4 center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, the VCU Epilepsy Center provides a complex, extensive approach to neurodiagnostic monitoring and medical treatment of neuropsychological and psychosocial disorders. Fourth-level centers offer the most comprehensive care available for patients with epilepsy, including evaluations for surgery and other procedures.  

The mission of the VCU Epilepsy Center is to: 

  1. Provide exceptional education to our students, residents and fellows and the wider community of medical professionals. 
  2. Improve the lives of children and adults with epilepsy through compassionate, high-quality medical care and patient education. 
  3. Advance the knowledge for the management, treatment and research of epilepsy. 

Our team of physicians provides a comprehensive evaluation for adults and children with epilepsy in both the ambulatory and inpatient setting.

At the VCU Epilepsy Center, we are actively involved in performing translational, basic science as well as clinical research to help advance the understanding and care of patients with epilepsy.

Education

Epilepsy Fellowship

The Division of Epilepsy offers a one-year epilepsy fellowship program. led by Christine M. Baca, MD, MSHS,  FAAN, and accredited by the  Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Those who successfully complete the program are eligible to take the Added Qualification in Epilepsy Exam offered by the  American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

About the Chief

Christine M. Baca, MD, MSHS, joined the VCU Department of Neurology in April 2021, as Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Quality and Chief of the Epilepsy Division. Dr. Baca is passionate about the need to evaluate and improve gaps in care for vulnerable populations, including those transitioning from pediatric to adult health care settings. Through research, education, quality improvement and clinical care, Dr. Baca's mission is to evaluate and improve access to and quality care for patients with neurological disease and symptoms. Dr. Baca looks forward to working collaboratively to deliver innovative, comprehensive, high-quality neurological care to patients across inpatient and ambulatory settings while ensuring clinician engagement wellness, and partnership. Outside work, Dr. Baca enjoys spending time with her three boys, her husband, and her two dogs.
